Sex and the Holy City

In the West, many Catholics ignore the Church's teachings on sex. But in poorer countries the words of the priest still matter, whether spoken from the pulpit or through a government minister. Pope John Paul believes everyone — not just the world's billion Catholics — should follow the Vatican's teachings. And he's tried to make sure the world listens, becoming a key player in the bitter global debate over women's rights and reproductive health. In this unique documentary, Steve Bradshaw investigates how the Pope who tried to act in the best interests of women came to be accused of ruining so many lives.

SEX AND THE HOLY CITY coincides with worldwide celebrations of 25 years
of the papacy of John Paul II, who a quarter of a century ago was widely
seen as a modern Pope with progressive views about sex and love - a
caring and compassionate man, who idealized women.

Today critics argue his campaign against contraception and abortion has
deprived millions of women of the right to control their fertility,
which many see as key to development. They claim that withholding birth
control from women who face death from unwanted pregnancy, or advising
people with AIDS not to use condoms is both immoral and inhumane.

The Vatican has counter-attacked, arguing it is trying to prevent a
"culture of death", a "contraceptive mentality", and promiscuity that
breaks up families and causes the spread of HIV-AIDS.

The program travels to Asia, Africa, and Latin America to talk to
ordinary men and women about how their own lives have been affected, and
to leading members of the Church who explain the thinking behind the
Church's doctrine.
