The
Sacred Choices Initiative
The Sacred Choices Initiative
is a worldwide issues campaign aimed at expanding
scholarly and lay perceptions of the positions
of the world's religions on contraception and
abortion. The goal is to change the international
discourse on family planning and open the way
to a more informed and humane stance on woman's
rights within a religious context. The campaign
was organized by a group of international religious
scholars from various religions known as The
Religious Consultation on Population, Reproductive
Health and Ethics. The Consultation is advised
by a council of recognized experts on population
and health.
The book Sacred Choices:
The Right to Contraception and Abortion in
Ten World Religions, by Daniel Maguire, is
the centerpiece for this global effort. However
this initiative also includes:
Chicago-based
WTTW-TV and Milwaukee's THE DUNCAN GROUP, INC.
are presently working on a co-production of
a new public television documentary in which
our work for Sacred Choices is being presented;
A
series of symposia in Egypt and Chile, beginning
in 2002, which will address the issues surrounding
the Sacred Choices Initiative;
The
Religious Consultation (TRC) web site will
provide users with instant access to the organizers
and serve as a bridge between online and offline
activities of the campaign.
Most people have been led
to believe that contraception and abortion
are forbidden by their religion. There are
other teachings in these same religions that
give followers the moral freedom to choose.
Sacred Choices seeks to make these suppressed
teachings widely known.
