German population continues to decline

WIESBADEN, Germany -- Germany's population continued to decline last year with fewer babies being born and more people dying, the federal statistics office said Monday.

The birthrate plunged to a new low in 2003 with 715,000 babies being born, 1.3 percent less than in 2002, while 858,000, or 1.6 percent, more people died over the same period, it said in a statement.

The result was a net population drop of 143,000 people.

Germany currently has a population of around 82.5 million people and the statistics office estimated last year that one in every three Germans would be aged 60 or over in 2050 if current birth and death trends continue.

The country's health and retirement systems, which have been the subject of widespread reform, have been over-burdened by a steadily ageing population.
