Rev. Debra Haffner
publishes manual on sex offenders and faith-based
communities
FULL
TEXT
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to let you know that my manual
on sex offenders and faith-based communities
has just been published.
As you know, child sexual abuse is a pervasive
and devastating public health problem. Many
denominations have been roiled by allegations
of sexual abuse on the part of clergy, staff,
and volunteers who work with children. The
sex offender registries now let us know when
there is a person with a history of sex offenders
in our congregations, and most congregations
are ill-equipped to handle such disclosures.
I have spent part of the last year researching
this issue, interviewing congregations and
clergy where it has occurred, and meeting with
experts.
I am pleased to announce that "Balancing
Acts: Keeping Children Safe in Congregations"
has now been published as an on-line resource
by the Unitarian Universalist Association.
It addresses policies to educate children and
adults about sex abuse prevention, screening
and other policies to keep children safe from
sexual abuse, assault, and harassment, and
strategies on how to include a treated sex
offender in congregational life.
It is the first resource in the United States
that directly addresses sex offenders and faith-based
communities.
There is an announcement of the publication on
the homepage of the Unitarian Universalist
Association: www.uua.org
It is also available as a pdf for downloading
at www.uua.org/cde/ethics/balancing/BalancingAct.pdf
This particular manual is designed for Unitarian
Universalist congregations, but should be helpful
to congregations of all faiths. I have adapted
it for Christian and Jewish congregations in
an interfaith version that will be published
in hard copy by the Christian Community this
spring. I will let you know ordering information
when it is available.
I'd welcome your comments and suggestions. I'd
also welcome you passing this on to colleagues
who might find the manual interesting or helpful.
Thank you!
