Israel and the Middle East Arms Race
To the Editors:
Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton says that if Iran produces nuclear
weapons it would "spark
an arms race" in the Middle East. (Milwaukee
Journal Sentinel, May 21,
2009, 3A). This misses the point that the arms
race has already been sparked
by the two nations which already have these
weapons, Israel and the United
States. Our position that Israel may have
these weapons of mass destruction
and the means to deliver them but none
of her neighbors has a right to such
weapons is not convincing. If Iran
had two hundred atomic bombs and the means
to deliver hem, would we be
surprised if Israel started to develop a similar
capacity?
A nuclear-weapons-free Middle East is the ideal, not the unilateral
Israeli
nuclear dominance we now support.
